What happened? I’ve been a victim of retaliatory actions because of fighting for my rights as a tenant. My experience echoes recent cases in Detroit, like the eviction of Taura Brown, a tenant rights activist who claimed retaliation after criticizing the management of her housing program. Despite paying rent and advocating for tenant protections, she was ordered to vacate her home by a judge after a lengthy court battle. Similarly, tenants at City Club Apartments were evicted for legally withholding rent due to unsafe conditions, even though Detroit’s housing code prohibits evictions from non-compliant buildings. These rulings raise serious concerns about judicial accountability and the protection of renters’ rights.What would you like to see happen? I want to see better connected oversight—and better judicial rulings. I want to see judicial power put in check when their influence is used to silence or punish tenants and activists.
How do you think others can help? Others can help by joining in the monitoring of judicial behavior, especially in housing courts. I want to see more celebration of courageous judges who stand on facts, not just legal abstractions. (2) others can help by becoming more engaged in who sits on the bench. That means awareness of their judicial hearings, scrutinizing their rulings, and demanding transparency in appointments. (3) We should target Judges who prioritize career advancement over justice.
